3 Artists I Have Chosen to Look at

Agnes Cecile

I am really interested in this artist because of how she expresses their emotions. What really got me interested in her piece is the way she uses the materials and creates different textures. When she uses watercolours she blends it in with various colours and create an abstract, she then uses colours to express their feelings or emotions.

For the black painting she uses oil, acrylic paint and varnish. She then dips her paint brush in, takes a big lump and she lets the paint drops while painting and smudging with it. I really like this as it is interesting to look at mostly because of the tone and colour. When black is on white it makes it more eye-catching for the viewers. She lets the paint go freely rather than precise and neatly.

She is an Italian artist, Silvia Pelissero, better known as Agnes Ceciel primarily, she creates emotionally evocative watercolor paintings. Through all of her experimentation she has found a way to express emotions by wisping as you can mostly see it in her watercolour paintings. Pelissero also captures emotion.  Her focus is on the eyes as they mainly express emotion through the whole painting.

 Nikos Gyftakis

Self Portraits, oil pastel on canvas, 190 X 150 cm

After looking at his work I started having ideas on what my theme could be based on. I really like the way he uses his oil pastel and the patterns he makes. These patterns are able to show the characters expressions or emotions and the colours help to add a greater effect, I might try and do the same thing but with  different patterns.

He was born in Athens, Greece in 1981. He studied Painting and also Theatrical Stage and Costume Design at School of Fine Arts at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His musical studies gave him ideas and inspiration for art. In 2005 he started painting and doing other things that his subject were related to. He have also created the stage-setting and paintings for several movies and theatrical shows and exhibitions.

Carne Griffiths

I really like the way she looks at a design  and then paints it on top of the face, what I really found interesting in her paintings is that she is able to show the persons expressions. If you want to here more about the Artist I already talked about her in post called 2 interesting Artists.

Robert Rauschenberg

This is an artwork that he did in (1963). As you can see he used screen-print for his work. In my opinion, the collage structure was affective as all of his pictures where everywhere which made an all-over composition; this was effective as you could focus onto one page whilst seeing all the composition he wanted to fit into one piece of artwork. This then gave the viewers understanding on how the artist felt and what he was trying to show. The pictures that where laid out everywhere tells us how it was back in 1930’s and onwards because it reflects on the chaos that happened and how it was a sad place filled of fear, agony and war.The artist used a lot of dark colours and primary and secondary colours; the red symbolised danger whilst the green was the camouflage wear for the army. The main colours were red, green and white which were all negative colours to present how bad it was in that year, for example you have Martin Luther king who died in that time period. He also uses colour for as symbols for example he has a singer in the colour red, the colour red could represent death, blood or violence. He then has Neil Armstrong; this was the only bright picture you could see because the colour was white. The fact that the he uses Armstrong in his work tells us that there were still some positive things happening in America, Armstrong’s image is large to show the good side of America and not only all the cons. Niels picture was important because all the other people shown in his work died a long time ago but he died recently in 2012, this shows us that the artist is trying to keep his artwork positive. The texture of his artwork looks vintage which gives the audience the idea of the context. The tone used was thick strokes. This art work was made in 1964; the artist who created this is called Robert Rauschenberg. Robert was born in Texas, United States and he died in 2008. In all of his art works he normally uses collage; what I like about his art is that he leaves the viewers to interpret his art work. He believed that painting is related to “both art and life.” His art mainly shows the past and the present, he seems to make the viewers surrounded by the world and the history.

He shows the negative things and the positive things that happened in the past but there are more negative views in his paintings. This could relate to the things that happened to him in the past, I know this because Martin Luther king died in 1964 and Robert Rauschenberg was there in that year. It could also relate to the fact that maybe a family member died in that year, bringing Robert horrible memories from the past than good. His work is based on America, meaning that he wanted his art work to show him and what he passed through in his background. His work is about the things that he witnessed and what happened in those years that he spent living. In this art work he uses famous people, because everyone will then understand what his artwork is about, for instant everyone knows Martin Luther King or Armstrong; they will then be able to translate his work Robert Rauschenberg is not trying to present the negative occurrences in America, on the other hand he is trying to show us what makes America and what we should not forget.

This artwork is called Retroactive. This changed the way I saw his work as he was not just trying to show where he came from, he was also trying to show us the retroactive. The definition of Retroactive is “something that is happening now that affects the past.” This changed my view of his artwork because in the same way he is trying to show the improvements from the past. Coloured people did not live in harmony with the white people in the past (in America) but now they live together as one in the present. This then shows the retroactive.

I think I am going to go with the theme emotion because all the artists I have been interested in all relate to emotions in their work and have different types of medium to express their emotion.

Colour wheel

Primary Secondary Tertiary Colors

Primary Colours: Red, yellow and blue
In traditional colour theory (used in paint and pigments), primary colours are the 3 pigment colours that can not be mixed or formed by any combination of other colours. All other colours are derived from these 3 colours. secondary colours are primary colours that are mixed. All other colours originate from primary colours.
Secondary Colours: Green, orange and purple
These are the colours formed by mixing the primary colours. More than one primary colour is mixed.

Tertiary Colours: Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green & yellow-green
These are the colours formed by mixing a primary and a secondary colour. That's why the colour is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.

Work so for In October

             Refining

I refined some pages that I did with my shells. I started drawing the shells in a different way or techniques to see the shells texture. This really went well because I was able to see which of the different techniques made the shells look like the shell I drew. The shell on the left conner I thought went really well as I really liked the texture and the way I handled the pencil. I did not just used the pencil and started shading, I used little scribbles which I thought went pretty well.

                               Work so Far

In October I started looking at old things like old toys. We are going with the theme memories, I decided to do faded memories. I took my Jeep because this toy is a really old toy this is the same for the doll. Someone gave my sister an old doll and as you can see one of its leg is broken. I thought this would really go well with my theme because it could mean different things, for example the leg missing could relate to faded.

The doll that I drew was really nice. I just like the way I made the face look soft as it really is. On the page at the right side, I used pencil to draw on the paper and a pen on the tracing paper.

This is my composition. I used different ways to express the composition. At the right hand side of the sketch book I have a fragmented picture on the left and a normal picture on the right. When I am going to do my annotations I am gong to talk about the contrast on how the fragmented piece looks more interesting than the right picture. The reason for that is because the fragmented piece has a white background which makes it more appealing to the eyes, and the other picture is just black which does not really make it more eye catching.

Using Artists Techniques

As my title says, I used used the artist's techniques but not in the same medium.

I took a picture from my sisters two dolls. I printed two pictures out and then cut them into little triangles with a crafting knife. It was very challenging as I struggled to cut them in a straight triangle, this went well as the work was similar to the artists own work.

It looked very nice from far away but if you looked closely you could see how bad I cut the triangles. If I am going to do this next time I am going to make sure that I cut the triangles BIG enough, this could maybe make it easier for me to cut the triangles.

This is the second one that I did. I thought this was going to be easy to do but it did not turn out as easy as I thought it would. Even thought the triangle was big I still struggled on cutting the triangle in a straight line. This I thought still went well since I stuck it well. I f you look very closely I used a little triangle to cover the white that was showing through.

What im going to do differently is I would I use a ruler instead of just doing it free handed.

I did not really like this work because it looked like I rushed through it. What I would really like to do differently is use different techniques. I will be looking toward to refining this work.

Artists I am going to look at for My Composition

John stezaker

Born 1949, in Worcester, UK
Lives and works in London, UK

John Stezaker’s work re-examines the various relationships to the photographic image: as documentation of truth, purveyor of memory, and symbol of modern culture. In his collages, Stezaker appropriates images found in books, magazines, and postcards and uses them as ‘ready-made.’

Born1972

Jelle Martens lives and works in Gent. He is a Belgian artist and graphic designer known for his combination of photography and collage. He works mostly with geometric figures which are based on the triangle shape.

i started making digital collages first for fun, something he stumbled onto while taking a computer arts class, but then got hooked. “I am constantly on the computer looking at images and trying to see if I could play around with it to get something new.” He recently went old school style and started making paper collages because the creative process is much more organic, not stuck in the confines of Photoshop.

My work so far

This is my first work I did in September using pen and pencil (line drawing).

We started looking at shells as it seemed to have a nice flat and smooth texture when drawing.

The page on the right ,as you can see, I used pencil which I thought was more affective since it is for me to add in different tonnes and shading.

Here I started using charcoal in black. It was my first time of using charcoal.
If you look at the first shell, I drew it but  it did not really turn out well. The second and the third shell went well as I was to show the real character of the shell as you can read in my big sketch book.

Two Interesting Artists

Carne Griffiths

Carne Griffiths

I really like his work, I like the way he uses watercolours as his medium. I choose this artists because it goes with my theme memories because this work looks like memories he had but not shown properly in my opinion. half the story.

He started of with studying fashion for years and he used to produce intricate designs for films, theatre, fashion advertisement ad even military. He started being a fine artist in 2010 he likes working with inks and watercolours. He always has a way of getting your attention on his work.

For me his work looks like a composition because he has all this splashes and colours going on in the picture. The faces I think pulls you in to his art work as they all have different expressions.

I really like his work because he creates this nice image of a person and blends it in with nature.
I thought this would go well with the theme because his work looks like someone who is fading away from the world or is being forgotten. Also, they could be looking down on a person but their already dead. In my opinion I think the nature represents peace, this could also be representing death because they will "rest in peace."
The size of the work could tell us how important the painting is to the artist as it is in a very large scale.

Eric Montoya was born in America and started painting in 1968. He was interested in technology and art. What he was trying to get out of his work is the personalities. For example the roses could show how caring or loving the person is. He does not just take random pictures of natures he goes around places or uses a colour related to a culture.

My own Composition

These are the pictures I took for my composition. As you can see I made sure all the pictures I took had a nice background to create this composition. For example the doll n the right has leaves and grass but the camera focused on the doll which makes it the highlight of the picture.

The vase at the left hand side shows a nice composition because the leaves are in-front of the vase and lead into it but your eyes are drawn into the subject, this effect worked well as the colour is brighter than the leaves. I could have found another background with leaves surrounding the vase and see how the composition looked like.

I thought the picture on the right went well because there is lots of things going on as there are two trees and in-between them you can see another view of the  nature which is not just trees. This for me creates a nice composition as there are lots of things going on but your eyes are still focused on the subject.
The vase on the left is good because it looks like a cave that is closing in on the vase and it is going to crack. the main focus of the picture is the vase, although the tree, grass and cave are visible e.t.c.

I like what I did with the car as it is  close to the devise ans there are many leaves and tall grass almost blocking the main focus,This is an interesting composition as natural features are blocking the car but your eyes are still focused on the subject.

This time I tried to put leaves on top of the old objects, this gave an affect that the car had been there for a long time

I really like the vase because it looks like it is hiding behind the leaves. What I thought went well is how the camera is focused on the leaves. In my opinion, the leaves were focused and should not have been focused because the vase was the main feature. if  I did this again, i would have removed some leaves to bring the subject to life rather than leave it to dissapear.

I thought that most of the pictures went well as they where all focused on on the object. One of the pictures has a very light background that was all  white. This goes with the theme, faded, because the white made it looks less visible, it makes it seem like the memory is getting lost.

I tried to put a yellow background to see the effect it had. Yet again the car was more visible because of its size and the colour.

I was interested in the picture on the right. I made a mistake and shook my hand as I thought I had finished taking the picture. It was a really nice composition because the car blended in with the background. My eyes are still drawn to the car which I thought made a good image. This fits well with my theme as the image is blurry.

The picture on the right is also nice because of the contrast and the shading (white to black).
